When they have located some area colleges, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although cost and location are important factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your comparisons. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs should be evaluated also. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate selection. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different duties of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the immediate supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are numerous tasks that they can carry out within the Camilla GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Camilla GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved undertakings, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training in contrast to assistants and typically obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are involved in more involved activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Camilla GA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Camilla GAAn approach that may be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Camilla GA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for example for commuting and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just be sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Training Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Georgia as well as across the Country, you must ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many potential students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other significant qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to enroll in a program that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Camilla GA veterinary assistant and technician colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous review process that confirms you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is in many cases a precondition for employment for a number of Camilla GA veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you choose must have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include checking with online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your specific schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Camilla GA veterinary clinics that you may want to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective way to get clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the colleges you are looking at have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help build relationships in the local Camilla GA vet community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant college may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A lower rate may indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could mean that the Camilla GA college has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Camilla GA programs you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you need to confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Camilla GA campus is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you determine if the Georgia vet colleges you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are offered near Camilla GA prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss due to work, sickness or family responsibilities. You might discover that an online college is the best solution to fit your vet education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Camilla GA

Camilla, Georgia

Camilla is a city in Mitchell County, Georgia, United States, and is its county seat.[4] As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 5,360.[5]

The city was incorporated in 1858. The name Camilla was chosen in honor of the granddaughter of Henry Mitchell, an American Revolutionary War general for whom Mitchell County was named.[6]

Camilla and Mitchell County were originally Creek country surrendered to the United States in the 1814 Treaty at Fort Jackson. Georgia divided the land ceded by Native Americans into lots to be given away in land lotteries. The lottery of 1820 awarded lands covering much of the southwest section of the state (applying only to land south of the future Lee County line and extending west to Chattahoochee and east to settled counties in east Georgia), including the area later known as Mitchell County. Despite having access to free land, few people moved to the region. Citizens hesitated to improve land, according to an early twentieth-century history the region, “"which God Almighty had left in an unfinished condition." It took approximately forty years (1820–1857) for the area to obtain its necessary legal population to become a separate county, after which Camilla became the county’s seat.[7]
