After all, you need to locate and enroll in a college that will furnish the appropriate training so that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you tackle reviewing and contrasting programs so that you can make the correct selection? Many future students start their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are close to their residences. After they have located some local colleges, they find out which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although cost and location are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs should be looked into as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate selection. We have presented several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the different duties of vet techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the main factor will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Oak Park CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard veterinarian practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Oak Park CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more involved tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their regular responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared with assistants and normally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are included in more complex activities, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and essentially perform the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires four years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Oak Park CA area research facilities also.

Veterinarian Online Programs

attending vet tech school online in Oak Park CAAn alternative that may make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Oak Park CA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for instance for commuting and study materials, can be lower compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Training Programs

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in California and across the Country, you must ask some important questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many potential students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Oak Park CA veterinary assistant and technician schools that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet assistant or tech program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier discussed, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous screening process that ensures you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is often a requirement for employment for many Oak Park CA vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include looking on online school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, contact some Oak Park CA veterinary clinics that you may want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to obtain practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the schools you are considering have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish associations in the local Oak Park CA vet community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician college may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A low rate might mean that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could indicate that the Oak Park CA school has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you may get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Oak Park CA schools you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary assistant classes from work or home, you need to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Oak Park CA college is located in or near a larger city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. Of course taking online classes might be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you determine if the California veterinarian colleges you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Oak Park CA before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss due to sickness, work or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Oak Park CA

Oak Park, California

Oak Park is an unincorporated community in Ventura County, California, United States. When developed in the Simi Hills in the late 1960s, a single road provided the only access to the community from Agoura Hills, California in neighboring Los Angeles County. As of the 2010 census, Oak Park had a population of 14,266, down from 14,625 at the 2000 census. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Oak Park as a census-designated place (CDP). The census definition of the area may not precisely correspond to local understanding of the area with the same name.

Oak Park is the biggest unincorporated community in Ventura County. Residents of the community have through votes declined to set up an independent city, and also declined to be annexed into neighboring Thousand Oaks.[3]

Oak Park has had human occupation from about 5500 B.C. to the present day. It lies within a zone including the early Millingstone Horizon and inland Chumash Indians. Indians camped throughout the area as they collected acorns, yucca, and other food. The sites in the area include major villages, smaller camps and several rock shelters.[4] Chumash people lived here for thousands of years prior to European contact. They lived off of trading, gathering and hunting. The Chumash originally settled in Oak Park due to an abundance of natural resources, including fresh water, acorns and rabbit-hunting.[5] It is one of the oldest occupied places in California.[6]
