Part of your determination may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Bradley IL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the standard veterinarian practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Bradley IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training compared to assistants and typically acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated duties, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and essentially perform the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Some may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Bradley IL area research facilities also.

And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Bradley IL veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, such as for traveling and study materials, can be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just make certain that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

And naturally you need to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Bradley IL veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the vet tech or assistant school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier discussed, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive review process that ensures you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is frequently a precondition for employment for many Bradley IL vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or trade school and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the vet community. Other pointers include looking on online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final pointer, contact some Bradley IL vet clinics that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Ask if the schools you are considering have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help develop connections in the local Bradley IL veterinarian community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant school may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A lower rate could suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the Bradley IL program has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Bradley IL colleges you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to attend a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you have to make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Bradley IL campus is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes might be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you ascertain if the Illinois veterinarian programs you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are available near Bradley IL prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss due to work, sickness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online college is the best way to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Bradley IL

Bradley, Illinois

Bradley (formerly North Kankakee) is a village in Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of the City of Kankakee. The population was 12,784 at the 2000 census, 15,070 in 2009, and 15,871 in 2012.

Bradley is a principal city of the Kankakee–Bradley Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Kankakee County. The county is also part of the larger Chicago–Naperville–Michigan City, IL-IN-WI Combined Statistical Area.

In 1891, North Kankakee was established when the David Bradley Plow Works established a factory, and in recognition of this, in 1895, the town changed its name to Bradley City (later Bradley). Bradley was mostly a blue collar town with the Kroehler Furniture factory and the Roper Corporation factory (maker of kitchen ranges and ovens; part of their operations were in the building that David Bradley once occupied) being the major employers. In the 1980s, as with the rest of the Midwest, these factories closed, and after their closures, parts of those factories burned to the ground. However, by the end of the decade, things changed. In 1989, a new shopping center called Bradley Square was built with Wal-Mart as the first tenant, and more shops followed. The brightest spot in the village's history came on August 1, 1990, when Northfield Square Mall opened. Bradley was poised to attract business. Since that time, the village has been growing. Now, many businesses inhabit the area.
