After all, you need to search for and enroll in a program that will furnish the proper training so that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about reviewing and comparing programs so that you can make the correct choice? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are close to their homes. When they have located some area colleges, they ascertain which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are important factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs should be looked into as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final choice. We have presented several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the various roles of vet techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the main factor will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of jobs that they can carry out within the Carol Stream IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Carol Stream IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more involved activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared with assistants and generally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated duties, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Carol Stream IL area research facilities as well.

Vet Online Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Carol Stream ILAn alternative that might make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are made available via the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Carol Stream IL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for example for commuting and study supplies, may be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just be sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Colleges

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Illinois as well as across the United States, you must ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many potential students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to enroll in a program that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Carol Stream IL vet technician and assistant colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary technician or assistant college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is often a requirement for employment for a number of Carol Stream IL veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet college or vocational school and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include checking with online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Carol Stream IL vet clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even suggest some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective means to get clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the programs you are looking at have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help develop relationships in the local Carol Stream IL vet community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech school can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A lower rate might indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could signify that the Carol Stream IL school has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could indicate that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Carol Stream IL schools you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to attend a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Get evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already covered location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you need to confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Carol Stream IL college is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes might be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Illinois vet schools you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Carol Stream IL prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of work, sickness or family issues. You might find that an online school is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your active life.
