After all, you need to search for and enroll in a program that will deliver the appropriate training to ensure that you can be successful as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you tackle analyzing and contrasting schools so that you can make the ideal selection? Many future students start their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are near their residences. When they have located some area colleges, they ascertain which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are important concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation should be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final selection. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the various responsibilities of vet assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Function of a Vet Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of functions that they can perform within the Carterville IL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Carterville IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared with assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more involved activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Carterville IL area research facilities as well.

Veterinary Online Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Carterville ILAn approach that might be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are made available over the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Carterville IL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for instance for traveling and study supplies, may be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Schools

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Illinois as well as across the Country, you need to ask some important questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you need to select a program that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Carterville IL veterinary assistant and tech programs that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or technician program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that confirms you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is often a precondition for employment for a number of Carterville IL veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you select must have an exceptional reputation within the vet field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations involving your specific schools. As a final tip, get in touch with some Carterville IL veterinarians that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the schools you are looking at have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help establish associations in the local Carterville IL veterinary community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech school may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A low rate could suggest that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the Carterville IL school has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Carterville IL colleges you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we previously talked about location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you have to confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Carterville IL college is located in or near a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Illinois veterinarian schools you are considering offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near Carterville IL prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family responsibilities. You might discover that an online program is the best solution to fit your vet training into your busy life.
