Although location and expense are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your evaluations. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make a final decision. We have furnished several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the varied duties of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of jobs that they can carry out within the Lake Montezuma AZ veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the conventional vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Lake Montezuma AZ. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complex activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared to assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states presently require vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and essentially perform the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Lake Montezuma AZ area research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Programs

attending vet tech school online in Lake Montezuma AZAn approach that may be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are made available through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using various methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Lake Montezuma AZ veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for example for traveling and study supplies, can be lower compared to more standard classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Schools

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Arizona as well as across the United States, you need to ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other significant qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to enroll in a school that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Lake Montezuma AZ veterinary assistant and tech colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is in many cases a requirement for employment for many Lake Montezuma AZ vet practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or vocational school and program you enroll in should have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with internet school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Arizona school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations regarding your specific schools. As a final tip, get in touch with some Lake Montezuma AZ veterinary clinics that you might wish to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the programs you are considering have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help build connections in the local Lake Montezuma AZ veterinarian community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant school may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate might indicate that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, verify that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may indicate that the Lake Montezuma AZ program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Lake Montezuma AZ programs you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you must confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Lake Montezuma AZ college is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs especially for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s essential that you determine if the Arizona vet schools you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are available near Lake Montezuma AZ prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss as a result of sickness, work or family issues. You might discover that an online school is the best way to fit your veterinary training into your active life.

A Little Bit About Lake Montezuma AZ

Lake Montezuma, Arizona

Lake Montezuma is a census-designated place (CDP) in Yavapai County in the U.S. state of Arizona. The population was 3,344 at the 2000 census. The CDP includes the communities of Rimrock and McGuireville. Located along Interstate 17, it is 20 miles (32 km) south of Sedona and 8 miles (13 km) north of Camp Verde in central Arizona's Verde Valley.

The community was originally known as Beaver Creek as ranchers and farmers settled along the banks of the creek named for the prolific numbers of beavers found there.

Wales Arnold, the first settler along Beaver Creek, came to Beaver Creek in 1870 and lived at what became known as The Montezuma Well Ranch. Arnold, who came to Arizona as a member of the California Column during the Civil War ultimately became the sutler or civilian merchant of the firm Arnold and Bowers at Camp Lincoln following his discharge from the Army at Fort Whipple August 29, 1864. His partner in this enterprise was George Bowers who was killed by Indians near the head of Copper Canyon while en route to Prescott alongside a young soldier named Robert Nix. Arnold held several hay contracts with the Army at Camp Lincoln (renamed Fort Verde in 1868) and grew the first alfalfa known to be grown in the Verde Valley. The Montezuma Well Ranch served as a way station where mail riders changed horses when the mail began to be carried from Fort Whipple to Fort Wingate.
