Although cost and location are important factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your evaluations. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the different responsibilities of vet techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Role of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are many tasks that they can perform within the Nahunta GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the standard veterinarian practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Nahunta GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared to assistants and typically acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are involved in more involved duties, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states presently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and basically carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Nahunta GA area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Programs

attending vet tech school online in Nahunta GAAn option that may be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are made available over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Nahunta GA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, such as for travel and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just be sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the perfect choice for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Georgia and across the Country, you must ask some qualifying questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our opening, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other important qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Nahunta GA veterinary assistant and technician colleges that you are considering.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the vet assistant or tech program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough review process that verifies you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is frequently a prerequisite for employment for a number of Nahunta GA vet practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet college or vocational school and program you enroll in must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary field. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions regarding your specific schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Nahunta GA veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to obtain practical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the schools you are considering have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help develop associations in the local Nahunta GA veterinarian community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician program may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A lower rate might indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the Nahunta GA program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Nahunta GA schools you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to participate in some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are a few more points to make on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you have to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Nahunta GA school is located in or near a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. Of course attending online classes might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the Georgia vet schools you are considering offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Nahunta GA prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family responsibilities. You might find that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.
