After all, you have to find and enroll in a program that will furnish the proper training so that you can be successful as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about reviewing and comparing schools so that you can make the best choice? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by looking for schools that are close to their residences. When they have identified some nearby colleges, they determine which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are significant factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation should be looked into as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate decision. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the different duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of functions that they can carry out within the Hacienda Heights CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the conventional vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Hacienda Heights CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared to assistants and normally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complex duties, for instance assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and for the most part perform the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes four years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Hacienda Heights CA area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Hacienda Heights CAAn alternative that might be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are provided over the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Hacienda Heights CA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for example for commuting and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just be sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Degree Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in California as well as across the Country, you need to ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many potential students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Hacienda Heights CA veterinary assistant and technician colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the vet tech or assistant school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for a number of Hacienda Heights CA vet practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you choose should have an exceptional reputation within the vet field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Hacienda Heights CA vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Hacienda Heights CA veterinary community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech college can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate may suggest that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the Hacienda Heights CA college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Hacienda Heights CA colleges you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you must make sure that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Hacienda Heights CA school is located near or in a larger city. Also, if you do choose to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the California veterinary schools you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are available near Hacienda Heights CA before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies. You might find that an online program is the ideal way to fit your vet education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Hacienda Heights CA

Hacienda Heights, California

Hacienda Heights is an unincorporated suburban community and census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the community had a total population of 54,038, up from 53,122 at the 2000 census.

During Spanish rule, Hacienda Heights was a part of Rancho La Puente, which was operated by the nearby Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in San Gabriel.[3] The Rancho was eventually acquired by John A. Rowland and William Workman in 1845 via a Mexican land grant, and eventually acquired by Elias "Lucky" Baldwin.[4] In 1912, his descendant, Anita Baldwin, sold the property to Edwin Hart and Jet Torrance.[4] The pair subdivided the area and named it North Whittier Heights, which became known for avocado, citrus and walnut orchards, in 1913.[5] However, from the Great Depression era to the early 1940s, citrus growing became unprofitable because of pests and diseases, setting the impetus for the area's transformation into a suburb.[6]

Originally an agricultural town, beginning in the 1940s and accelerating in the 1950s, suburban residential development, which occurred southward (beginning on subdivisions near Kwis Avenue),[6] transformed Hacienda Heights into a residential or bedroom community.[7] In 1961, the Hacienda Heights Branch of the Los Angeles County Public Library opened.[6] The following year, in 1961, the area was renamed Hacienda Heights.[4] In 1964, the local newspaper, the Hacienda Heights Highlander, was established.[6]
