Many future students start their due diligence process by looking for schools that are close to their homes. Once they have located some nearby schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are significant factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation need to be evaluated also. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make a final decision. We have furnished several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the various roles of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Job of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of jobs that they can carry out within the Kailua HI veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Kailua HI. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared with assistants and typically acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complex duties, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states presently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years. Therefore the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Kailua HI area research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Kailua HIAn option that might be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered over the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Kailua HI veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, such as for traveling and study materials, can be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just confirm that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Training Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Hawaii as well as across the USA, you must ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other significant qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Kailua HI veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary assistant or tech school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that verifies you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a prerequisite for employment for many Kailua HI veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet college or vocational school and program you choose should have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Hawaii school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations concerning your targeted schools. As a final tip, call some Kailua HI vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to get practical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the programs you are looking at have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local Kailua HI veterinarian community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant program may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A lower rate may suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the Kailua HI program has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Kailua HI schools you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet technician classes from home or work, you must make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Kailua HI campus is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you determine if the Hawaii veterinarian programs you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are available near Kailua HI before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family responsibilities. You may find that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.
