After all, you have to locate and enroll in a college that will deliver the necessary training to ensure that you can be successful as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you tackle reviewing and contrasting schools so that you can make the correct choice? Many future students launch their due diligence process by searching for schools that are near their homes. When they have identified some local schools, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are important factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation need to be evaluated also. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make a final decision. We have presented several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the varied duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary determiner will undoubtedly be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are many tasks that they can carry out within the Peoria IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Peoria IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries. A few of their regular responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared with assistants and usually earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more involved duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Peoria IL area research facilities as well.

Online Vet Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Peoria ILAn option that may be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while attending vet school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using various venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Peoria IL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, for example for travel and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Training Programs

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Illinois as well as across the United States, you must ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other significant qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other factors are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the Peoria IL veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the veterinary assistant or technician school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that ensures you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is often a requirement for employment for a number of Peoria IL vet practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you select should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your targeted schools. As a final pointer, contact some Peoria IL vet clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local Peoria IL vet community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant college can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate may mean that the instructors were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the Peoria IL school has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Peoria IL programs you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Okay, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from work or home, you need to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Peoria IL school is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. Of course attending online classes might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you ascertain if the Illinois vet programs you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are available near Peoria IL before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family responsibilities. You may find that an online program is the best way to fit your veterinary training into your active life.

A Little Bit About Peoria IL

Peoria, Illinois

Peoria (/piˈɔːriə/, pee-OAR-ee-ə) is a city in and the county seat of Peoria County, Illinois, United States,[4] and the largest city on the Illinois River. Established in 1691 by the French explorer Henri de Tonti, Peoria is the oldest European settlement in Illinois,[5] and is named after the Peoria tribe. As of the 2010 census, the city was the seventh-most populated in Illinois (and the third largest outside the Chicago metropolitan area), with a population of 115,007.[6] The Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 373,590 in 2011. Peoria had a population of 118,943 in 2010, when far northern Peoria was also included. Peoria is currently the global and national headquarters for Caterpillar Inc., one of the 30 companies composing the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and listed on the Fortune 100, but a relocation of the headquarters to Deerfield, Illinois is planned for 2017 or 2018.[7]

Peoria is one of the oldest settlements in Illinois, as explorers first ventured up the Illinois River from the Mississippi. The lands that eventually would become Peoria were first settled in 1680, when French explorers René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle and Henri de Tonti constructed Fort Crevecoeur.[5] This fort would later burn to the ground, and in 1813 Fort Clark, Illinois was built. When the County of Peoria was organized in 1825, Fort Clark was officially named Peoria.[8]

Peoria was named after the Peoria tribe, a member of the Illinois Confederation. The original meaning of the word is uncertain.[9] A 21st-century proposal suggests a derivation from a Proto-Algonquian word meaning "to dream with the help of a manitou."[10]
