After all, you need to find and enroll in a school that will furnish the necessary training to ensure that you can succeed as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you tackle analyzing and contrasting colleges so that you can make the best selection? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are close to their residences. When they have found some local colleges, they find out which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are important considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your assessments. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs should be considered also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final decision. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the various roles of vet assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Grace ID veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the standard veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Grace ID. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and basically carry out the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes 4 years. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Grace ID area research facilities as well.

Veterinary Online Courses

attending vet tech school online in Grace IDAn alternative that may make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are provided via the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Grace ID veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for instance for travel and study materials, can be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make sure that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the perfect choice for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Idaho and across the Country, you must ask some relevant questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other important qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you need to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Grace ID vet assistant and tech colleges that you are considering.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the vet tech or assistant program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a precondition for employment for many Grace ID veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you enroll in must have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Idaho school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, get in touch with some Grace ID veterinary clinics that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best means to get practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the programs you are considering have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help develop associations in the local Grace ID veterinarian community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech school can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A lower rate might signify that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the Grace ID college has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Grace ID schools you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously covered location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Grace ID college is located close by or within a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes could be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Idaho veterinary schools you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are available near Grace ID prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family responsibilities. You might discover that an online school is the best solution to fit your vet education into your active life.

Why Did You Choose to Be a Veterinary Technician?

When preparing to interview for a veterinary job, it's advantageous to review questions you may be asked. Among the questions that recruiters often ask veterinary applicants is "What drove you to select veterinary care as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not just the private reasons you may have for being a vet assistant, but additionally what characteristics and abilities you have that make you good at your profession. A Little Bit About Grace ID

Grace, Idaho

The area of Grace was once inhabited by the Shoshone Indians. The Oregon Trail passed within 4 miles (6.4 km) of Grace and the town itself was established with a post office in 1894.[4] Unlike other nearby historic towns such as Paris and Franklin, Grace was not originally settled by Mormon pioneers, but has since become a predominantly Mormon-populated town. The economy in and around Grace has traditionally been driven by agriculture, with potatoes, alfalfa, grain, dairy and ranching being the main staples.

Grace is one of the northernmost cities along the Wasatch Range which extends approximately 160 miles (260 km) south, and is only 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the large fault line that defines the range. Grace is located near the center of Gem Valley.

In stark contrast to the surrounding mountains, the valley floor in the immediate area of Grace is flat due to volcanic activity in the area some 30,000 years ago. The lava flow that created the valley also diverted the Bear River from its Pacific drainage into the Great Basin. This was a significant contributor to the growth of the prehistoric Lake Bonneville of which the Great Salt Lake is a remnant. Lake Bonneville reached its farthest north advance about four miles (6 km) southwest of Grace before it broke through the earthen barrier at Red Rock pass north of Preston, Idaho. The Bear River today runs to the north and west of Grace and terminates in the Great Salt Lake.
