After all, you have to search for and enroll in a school that will provide the appropriate training to ensure that you can succeed as a vet technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you approach evaluating and comparing programs so that you can make the best selection? Many potential students start their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their residences. After they have found some nearby schools, they determine which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation need to be evaluated also. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final decision. We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the different responsibilities of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Job of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your preference might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the principal factor will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many functions that they can perform within the Greenup IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the typical veterinarian practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Greenup IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training compared with assistants and generally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complex duties, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes four years. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Greenup IL area research facilities as well.

Veterinarian Online Programs

attending vet tech school online in Greenup ILAn option that may be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinarian college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are provided by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Greenup IL veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, such as for travel and study materials, can be more affordable compared to more standard classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the perfect choice for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Illinois as well as across the Country, you should ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other important qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to enroll in a school that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Greenup IL veterinary assistant and technician schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the vet tech or assistant program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that verifies you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a prerequisite for employment for a number of Greenup IL veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you enroll in should have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include looking on internet school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final tip, phone some Greenup IL vet clinics that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They may even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective approach to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the programs you are looking at have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help develop relationships in the local Greenup IL vet community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant college may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A lower rate might indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could signify that the Greenup IL program has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might indicate that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Greenup IL colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we already talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet technician classes from home or work, you have to make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Greenup IL campus is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you find out if the Illinois veterinary schools you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered near Greenup IL prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family responsibilities. You may find that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your vet training into your active life.
