After all, you must locate and enroll in a program that will furnish the proper training to ensure that you can succeed as a vet technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you go about evaluating and comparing schools so that you can make the correct choice? Many future students begin their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are close to their residences. When they have located some nearby colleges, they find out which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are important considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs need to be considered as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate decision. We have provided several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the various roles of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of tasks that they can carry out within the Lower Lake CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Lower Lake CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complicated undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared with assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are involved in more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes 4 years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Lower Lake CA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Courses

attending vet tech school online in Lower Lake CAAn option that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Lower Lake CA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, such as for traveling and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the perfect choice for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Schools

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in California as well as across the USA, you should ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many potential students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other significant qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to select a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Lower Lake CA veterinary assistant and technician schools that you are considering.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the vet assistant or technician school you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that confirms you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is in many cases a precondition for employment for many Lower Lake CA veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, contact some Lower Lake CA vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective way to get clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help build relationships in the local Lower Lake CA veterinarian community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant program may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A low rate could indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might indicate that the Lower Lake CA college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Lower Lake CA schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary assistant classes from work or home, you have to make sure that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Lower Lake CA school is located in or near a large city. Also, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s essential that you find out if the California vet programs you are considering offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available near Lower Lake CA prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of sickness, work or family emergencies. You might find that an online school is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.
