After all, you must locate and enroll in a school that will furnish the necessary training to ensure that you can be successful as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach evaluating and comparing schools so that you can make the right choice? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are close to their residences. After they have located some nearby schools, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although cost and location are important factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs need to be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make a final choice. We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the varied duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Role of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your preference might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are many jobs that they can perform within the Oswego IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the conventional vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Oswego IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more involved undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared with assistants and typically obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated activities, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and essentially perform the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires 4 years. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Oswego IL area research facilities also.

Vet Online Schools

attending vet tech school online in Oswego ILAn approach that may be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while attending veterinary college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are offered over the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Oswego IL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, such as for travel and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the right option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Schools

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Illinois as well as across the USA, you need to ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously mentioned other essential qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to choose a college that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Oswego IL vet assistant and technician colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary assistant or tech college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive review process that verifies you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is in many cases a requirement for employment for many Oswego IL vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you choose should have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions regarding your specific schools. As a final tip, contact some Oswego IL veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to get clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the schools you are considering have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help build associations in the local Oswego IL vet community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech college may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A lower rate could mean that the instructors were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may signify that the Oswego IL college has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Oswego IL colleges you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we previously covered location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you need to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Oswego IL college is located in or near a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you ascertain if the Illinois vet schools you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Oswego IL before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family responsibilities. You may find that an online program is the best way to fit your vet training into your hectic life.

When prepping to interview for a veterinary position, it's helpful to reflect on questions you might be asked. One of the things that interviewers frequently ask veterinary candidates is "What made you decide on veterinary care as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to learn is not only the private reasons you might have for becoming a vet tech, but additionally what qualities and skills you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. A Little Bit About Oswego IL

Oswego, Illinois

Oswego /ɒsˈwiːɡoʊ/ is a village in Kendall County, Illinois, United States. The village population, according to the 2010 census, is 30,355. Its population has more than doubled since the 2000 census count of 13,326. With that growth, Oswego is the largest municipality located completely within Kendall County.

Oswego is known to some Chicago area residents for the town dragstrip, open from 1955 until 1979, where muscle cars were raced by drivers from all over the Midwest.[3][4] The drag days are celebrated today even though the strip has been closed for decades.[5]

In 1833, William Smith Wilson, his wife Rebecca, and his brother-in-law Daniel Pearce moved to the area now known as Oswego.[6] The land was officially owned by the local Potowatomi, Ottawa, and Chippewa tribes, but the United States government removed the Native Americans when the government started surveying the land along the Fox River in Kendall County. In 1842, the federal government placed the land for sale at an established price of $1.25 an acre.[7]
