The Function of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal determiner will undoubtedly be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are numerous functions that they can perform within the Big Rock IL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Big Rock IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more involved tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their normal responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training in contrast to assistants and normally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and for the most part perform the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Big Rock IL area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Programs

Since the classes are offered over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Big Rock IL veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for instance for commuting and study supplies, can be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just be sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Illinois and across the Country, you should ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many future students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to select a college that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Big Rock IL veterinary assistant and technician programs that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the vet technician or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Big Rock IL veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or vocational school and program you enroll in must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include looking on online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final pointer, phone some Big Rock IL veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to get practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the programs you are considering have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help develop relationships in the local Big Rock IL veterinarian community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant school may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate might suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could signify that the Big Rock IL college has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might indicate that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Big Rock IL colleges you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Okay, we already covered location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you must confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Big Rock IL campus is located near or in a large city. In addition, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the Illinois veterinarian programs you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are available near Big Rock IL before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss because of sickness, work or family emergencies. You may find that an online program is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.
