Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are near their residences. Although location and expense are significant concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your comparisons. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final choice. We have furnished several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the various duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Function of a Vet Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the principal factor will undoubtedly be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are numerous jobs that they can carry out within the Hoopeston IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the typical vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Hoopeston IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complex activities, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared to assistants and usually acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated duties, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and essentially perform the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years to complete. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Hoopeston IL area research facilities as well.

Vet Online Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Hoopeston ILAn approach that might be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while attending vet school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are offered via the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Hoopeston IL veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for instance for travel and study supplies, may be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Illinois as well as across the United States, you must ask some qualifying questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other factors are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the Hoopeston IL veterinary assistant and technician colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough review process that ensures you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is often a precondition for employment for many Hoopeston IL veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or vocational school and program you choose should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with internet school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final pointer, call some Hoopeston IL vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective approach to get practical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the colleges you are looking at have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help build connections in the local Hoopeston IL vet community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant program can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate might mean that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could mean that the Hoopeston IL school has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Hoopeston IL schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Hoopeston IL school is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes might be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you determine if the Illinois veterinarian programs you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Hoopeston IL before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of sickness, work or family emergencies. You may find that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.
