Many future students begin their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their homes. Although expense and location are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only critical ones when making your evaluations. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final selection. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the various duties of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Job of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your preference might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the principal factor will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are a number of tasks that they can carry out within the Jewell GA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the typical veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Jewell GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared with assistants and usually earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes four years. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Jewell GA area research facilities also.

Veterinarian Online Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Jewell GAAn approach that may be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinary college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Jewell GA veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for example for travel and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the right option for you.

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Georgia and across the USA, you should ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many prospective students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously touched on other important qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to enroll in a program that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Jewell GA veterinary technician and assistant programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the vet technician or assistant school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that ensures you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is often a prerequisite for employment for a number of Jewell GA vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you select must have an outstanding reputation within the vet field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your specific schools. As a final pointer, phone some Jewell GA vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They may even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help build associations in the local Jewell GA vet community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech school may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A low rate might suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could indicate that the Jewell GA school has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Jewell GA colleges you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet tech classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Jewell GA college is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online may be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the Georgia veterinary schools you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered near Jewell GA prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family issues. You might find that an online school is the best solution to fit your vet education into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Jewell GA

Richard Jewell

Richard Allensworth Jewell (born Richard White;[1] December 17, 1962 – August 29, 2007) was an American police officer and security guard. While working as a security guard for AT&T, he became known in connection with the Centennial Olympic Park bombing at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.[2] Discovering a backpack filled with three pipe bombs on the park grounds, Jewell alerted police and helped to evacuate the area before the bomb exploded, saving many people from injury or death. Initially hailed by the media as a hero, Jewell was later considered a suspect. Jewell's case is considered an example of the damage that can be done by reporting based on unreliable or incomplete information.[3]

Despite never being charged, he underwent a "trial by media" with great toll on his personal and professional life. Jewell was eventually completely exonerated, and Eric Rudolph was later found to have been the bomber.[4][5] In 2006, Governor Sonny Perdue publicly thanked Jewell on behalf of the State of Georgia for saving the lives of those at the Olympics.[6] Jewell died on August 29, 2007 of heart failure from complications of diabetes at age 44.

Jewell was born Richard White in Danville, Georgia, the son of Bobi, an insurance claims co-ordinator, and Robert Earl White, who worked for Chevrolet.[1] Richard's parents divorced when he was four. His mother remarried, to John Jewell, an insurance executive, who adopted Richard.[1] Jewell was married to Dana Jewell.
