After all, you must find and enroll in a school that will provide the necessary training so that you can be successful as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you tackle analyzing and contrasting schools so that you can make the best choice? Many future students launch their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are close to their residences. Once they have found some local colleges, they find out which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are important concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs should be looked into also. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate decision. We have furnished several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the various duties of vet assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Function of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the main factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are many tasks that they can carry out within the Astoria IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the typical vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Astoria IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their normal responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared to assistants and usually obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and for the most part perform the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Astoria IL area research facilities also.

Vet Online Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Astoria ILAn option that might make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while attending veterinary school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Astoria IL veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for example for commuting and study materials, can be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Illinois and across the USA, you should ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other significant qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And of course you need to enroll in a school that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other factors are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the Astoria IL vet assistant and tech colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that confirms you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a precondition for employment for many Astoria IL vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your targeted schools. As a final pointer, phone some Astoria IL veterinarians that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to get clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a professional environment. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help establish associations in the local Astoria IL vet community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech program can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate may indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the Astoria IL school has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Astoria IL schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we already talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Astoria IL campus is located in or near a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online may be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the Illinois veterinary colleges you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are offered near Astoria IL prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss because of sickness, work or family emergencies. You might discover that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Astoria IL

Astoria, Queens

Astoria is a middle-class and commercial neighborhood with a population of 78,793[1] in the northwestern corner of the New York City borough of Queens. Located in Community Board 1, Astoria is bounded by the East River and is adjacent to three other Queens neighborhoods: Long Island City, Sunnyside (bordering at Northern Boulevard), and Woodside (bordering at 50th Street). Astoria is patrolled by the New York City Police Department's 114th Precinct.[3]

The area now known as Astoria was originally called Hallett's Cove, after its first landowner William Hallett, who settled there in 1652 with his wife, Elizabeth Fones. Beginning in the early 19th century, affluent New Yorkers constructed large residences around 12th and 14th streets, an area that later became known as Astoria Village (now Old Astoria). Hallett's Cove, incorporated on April 12, 1839[4] and previously founded by fur merchant Stephen A. Halsey, was a noted recreational destination and resort for Manhattan's wealthy.[5][6]

The area was renamed for John Jacob Astor, then the wealthiest man in America with a net worth of over $40 million, in order to persuade him to invest in the neighborhood. He only invested $500, but the name stayed nonetheless, as a bitter battle over naming the village finally was won by Astor's supporters and friends. From Astor's summer home in Hell Gate, Manhattan—on what is now East 87th Street near York Avenue—he could see across the East River the new Long Island village named in his honor. Astor, however, never actually set foot in Astoria.
