After all, you must find and enroll in a school that will provide the necessary training so that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about evaluating and comparing schools so that you can make the right selection? Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by searching for schools that are near their residences. Once they have identified some local schools, they find out which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your assessments. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs should be looked into also. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate choice. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the different roles of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Job of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your determination might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the principal factor will undoubtedly be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many duties that they can carry out within the Prairie Grove AR veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the standard vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Prairie Grove AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training in contrast to assistants and typically acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more involved activities, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes 4 years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Prairie Grove AR area research facilities as well.

Veterinarian Online Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Prairie Grove ARAn option that might make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are provided through the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Prairie Grove AR veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for example for traveling and study materials, may be lower compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just confirm that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Schools

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Arkansas as well as across the United States, you must ask some important questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other significant qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Prairie Grove AR vet assistant and technician programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the vet tech or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier discussed, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough review process that verifies you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a prerequisite for employment for a number of Prairie Grove AR veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet trade school or college and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include looking on internet school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your targeted schools. As a final tip, call some Prairie Grove AR veterinarians that you might want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even suggest one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Prairie Grove AR veterinarian community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant college can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A lower rate could suggest that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could signify that the Prairie Grove AR program has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could signify that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Prairie Grove AR colleges you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are a few more points to make on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you must confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Prairie Grove AR campus is located in or close by a large city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you find out if the Arkansas veterinarian schools you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered near Prairie Grove AR prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies. You may find that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your active life.

Prairie Grove, Arkansas

Prairie Grove is a city in Washington County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 4,380 at the 2010 Census. The park spans a large amount of land and contains a visitor center, museum, several monuments, a driving tour and a collection of period buildings and homes you can tour.

Prairie Grove was the site of the Battle of Prairie Grove during the American Civil War. Confederate forces under General Thomas C. Hindman attempted to prevent the juncture of two Federal forces under Generals James G. Blunt and Francis J. Herron. The result of the battle was a tactical stalemate which assured permanent Union control of northwest Arkansas. The battlefield is now a State Military Park. During Labor Day weekend in the fall, the park hosts the Clothesline Fair which is a typical southern style hometown celebration. Crafts vendors and artists from all over the nation descend on this southern town to display and sell their talents and wares.

The Natural Resources Defense Council released an issue paper stating between that 1997 and 2001, Prairie Grove was the center of a cluster of testicular cancer cases. No clear cause has been identified but the NRDC notes the town is near a closed nuclear reactor and a low-level radioactive landfill. Arsenic from industrialized chicken manure is another possible source. In 2004, residents sued one of the poultry farms and the poultry feed manufacturer for spreading contaminated manure throughout Prairie Grove. The lawsuit did not assign blame and the cause of the cancer cluster has never been definitively determined.[3][4][5]
