Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their residences. Although cost and location are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation need to be evaluated also. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final choice. We have furnished several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the various duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary determiner will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of tasks that they can carry out within the Shasta Lake CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Shasta Lake CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more involved activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared with assistants and usually earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more complex functions, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states presently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and for the most part perform the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Shasta Lake CA area research facilities also.

Vet Online Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Shasta Lake CAAn option that might be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Shasta Lake CA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for instance for travel and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just be sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Colleges

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and trade schools in California as well as across the United States, you need to ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many potential students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other important qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to choose a school that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Shasta Lake CA veterinary technician and assistant programs that you are considering.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary tech or assistant program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive screening process that ensures you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a requirement for employment for a number of Shasta Lake CA veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you choose must have an outstanding reputation within the vet field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include looking on online school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions involving your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Shasta Lake CA veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Ask if the schools you are looking at have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local Shasta Lake CA vet community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant program can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A lower rate could indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the Shasta Lake CA school has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Shasta Lake CA programs you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from work or home, you need to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Shasta Lake CA campus is located in or near a large city. Also, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes might be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the California veterinarian programs you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are available near Shasta Lake CA prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family responsibilities. You might find that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.
