After all, you have to find and enroll in a college that will deliver the necessary training to ensure that you can be successful as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about evaluating and comparing colleges so that you can make the best choice? Many future students start their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are near their homes. Once they have located some area colleges, they determine which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are significant concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs should be looked into also. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate selection. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the different responsibilities of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Job of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the main factor will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are a number of functions that they can carry out within the Eastman GA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Eastman GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared to assistants and usually obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complex activities, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states presently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Eastman GA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Eastman GAAn approach that might be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Eastman GA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for example for commuting and study materials, can be lower compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Training Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Georgia as well as across the United States, you need to ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other significant qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Eastman GA vet assistant and tech colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or technician program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough review process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Eastman GA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet college or vocational school and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final tip, get in touch with some Eastman GA veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They might even recommend one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective approach to obtain practical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help build relationships in the local Eastman GA veterinarian community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant school can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate may signify that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, verify that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may indicate that the Eastman GA college has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Eastman GA colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to participate in some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you need to make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Eastman GA campus is located close by or within a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s essential that you find out if the Georgia veterinarian programs you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered near Eastman GA before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies. You might discover that an online program is the best solution to fit your vet education into your busy life.
