After all, you must search for and enroll in a college that will furnish the appropriate training so that you can be successful as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you tackle evaluating and contrasting programs so that you can make the proper selection? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are close to their homes. When they have found some nearby colleges, they find out which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are important factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs need to be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final choice. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the different duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Role of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many functions that they can perform within the Monticello GA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the conventional vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Monticello GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared to assistants and normally acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated duties, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states presently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Monticello GA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Schools

attending vet tech school online in Monticello GAAn approach that may be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinary college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided through the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Monticello GA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for example for traveling and study supplies, may be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Degree Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Georgia as well as across the USA, you need to ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you need to choose a school that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Monticello GA vet assistant and tech programs that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or technician program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding review process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is frequently a prerequisite for employment for many Monticello GA veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or vocational school and program you choose should have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations involving your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, contact some Monticello GA veterinary clinics that you might wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to get clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the schools you are looking at have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local Monticello GA vet community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician college can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A low rate may indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could signify that the Monticello GA program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Monticello GA schools you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we already talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you must make sure that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Monticello GA college is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online may be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the Georgia veterinarian programs you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are available near Monticello GA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, sickness or family responsibilities. You might find that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your active life.

Monticello is the largest city and the county seat of Jasper County, Georgia,[4]United States. The city includes historic buildings such as the Jasper County Courthouse, Monticello High School and the Monticello Historic District. The population was 2,428 at the 2000 census. It is 61 miles south of Atlanta.

Monticello was founded in 1808 as seat of the newly formed Jasper County. It was incorporated as a town in 1810 and as a city in 1901.[5]

On January 14, 1915, about 100 white men of Monticello formed a lynch mob and lynched a black family of four, including two married women. They took Dan Barber, his son Jesse Barber, and two married daughters Bula and Ella (Barber) Charles from the county jail, where they had been put after being arrested for attacking the chief of police. He had challenged Dan Barber in his house for making liquor illegally. The mob shot and hanged each of the four.[6]
