The Role of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the principal factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are numerous jobs that they can perform within the Paris IL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the standard vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Paris IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training in contrast to assistants and normally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complicated duties, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and for the most part perform the same job functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires four years to complete. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Paris IL area research facilities also.

Online Vet Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Paris ILAn approach that may be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while attending vet school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are made available through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Paris IL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for instance for traveling and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Schools

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Illinois as well as across the USA, you need to ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And of course you need to select a school that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Paris IL vet technician and assistant programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the veterinary tech or assistant college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that confirms you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for a number of Paris IL vet practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or trade school and program you select should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with internet school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations involving your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, call some Paris IL vet clinics that you may want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They might even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Paris IL veterinarian community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant school can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A lower rate might indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could signify that the Paris IL school has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Paris IL colleges you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we already covered location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you must make sure that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Paris IL school is located close by or within a larger city. In addition, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. Of course attending online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you determine if the Illinois veterinary colleges you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near Paris IL before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family issues. You may find that an online school is the best solution to fit your vet education into your active life.
