Although location and expense are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your comparisons. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate selection. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the different duties of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Function of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are many jobs that they can perform within the Ben Lomond CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Ben Lomond CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries. A few of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared with assistants and generally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and basically perform the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Ben Lomond CA area research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Training Programs

Since the classes are provided by means of the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Ben Lomond CA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for example for commuting and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in California and across the United States, you need to ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And of course you need to enroll in a school that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Ben Lomond CA veterinary technician and assistant schools that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the veterinary tech or assistant school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough review process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is frequently a prerequisite for employment for a number of Ben Lomond CA veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you select must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your targeted schools. As a final tip, call some Ben Lomond CA veterinary clinics that you may wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They might even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local Ben Lomond CA veterinary community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician college can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate may indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the Ben Lomond CA school has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Ben Lomond CA programs you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we previously discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you need to make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Ben Lomond CA campus is located in or close by a large city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges especially for state and community colleges. Of course attending online classes might be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s essential that you determine if the California vet programs you are considering offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available near Ben Lomond CA before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family responsibilities. You may find that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your active life.
