We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the different responsibilities of vet techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Job of a Vet Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are many duties that they can perform within the Durand IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the conventional vet practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Durand IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complex tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared to assistants and generally obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated functions, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and basically carry out the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes four years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Durand IL area research facilities also.

Vet Online Training Classes

Since the classes are provided via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Durand IL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for example for commuting and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just be sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Illinois and across the USA, you need to ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our opening, many potential students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other significant qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you need to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Durand IL vet assistant and technician colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the vet tech or assistant program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous screening process that verifies you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a precondition for employment for many Durand IL vet practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you select must have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include looking on online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Durand IL veterinarians that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest one or more schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to obtain practical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Ask if the colleges you are looking at have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help build associations in the local Durand IL vet community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech college may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate may suggest that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the Durand IL school has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Durand IL schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we already covered location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet technician classes from home or work, you have to make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Durand IL college is located in or close by a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you determine if the Illinois veterinarian programs you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Durand IL prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies. You might discover that an online school is the best solution to fit your vet training into your active life.
