After all, you need to locate and enroll in a school that will provide the appropriate training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach reviewing and contrasting schools so that you can make the best selection? Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their residences. When they have located some nearby colleges, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are important considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your assessments. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation need to be evaluated also. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate decision. We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the varied roles of vet techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Malad City ID veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the conventional vet practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Malad City ID. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex undertakings, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training compared to assistants and generally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and basically perform the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Malad City ID area research facilities as well.

Veterinarian Online Programs

attending vet tech school online in Malad City IDAn approach that may make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while attending vet school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided by means of the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Malad City ID veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, such as for commuting and study supplies, may be lower compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Colleges

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Idaho as well as across the United States, you need to ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to choose a college that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the Malad City ID veterinary technician and assistant schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary assistant or tech college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that verifies you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a prerequisite for employment for many Malad City ID vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or trade school and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Idaho school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions concerning your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Malad City ID vet clinics that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a professional environment. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish associations in the local Malad City ID vet community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant college may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate could mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might mean that the Malad City ID school has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you most likely will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Malad City ID schools you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we previously talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you have to make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Malad City ID college is located in or near a large city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you find out if the Idaho vet programs you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Malad City ID prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss because of sickness, work or family issues. You might find that an online school is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Malad City ID

Malad City, Idaho

Malad City (also commonly known as Malad) is the only city in Oneida County, Idaho, United States.[4][5] Its population was 2,095 at the 2010 census, down from 2,158 in 2000.[6]

The city is named after the nearby Malad River, the name being French for "sickly".[7] Malad City is located along Interstate 15 on the east side of the Malad Valley 13 miles (21 km) from the Utah/Idaho border.

Established in 1864, Malad is one of the oldest communities in the state of Idaho. The community received its name from Donald Mackenzie, a Scottish-Canadian trapper, who passed through the valley between 1818 and 1821 with a party of trappers. Some of his men became sick while camped here and, believing that the illness was caused by drinking water from the valley's principal stream, he named it "Malade" meaning sick or bad in the French language. Actually, the water had nothing to do with the men's illness, as it was later learned by the second party led by Jim Bridger between 1832 and 1835. The men had most likely eaten some beaver that fed on the poisonous roots of "Water Hemlock" trees that put a naturally occurring "cicutoxin" into the animals' flesh. The beaver would have likely been immune to the poison because of long-term adaptation, but the trappers suffered from their feast. Native tribes avoided this outcome by altering food preparation methods to include boiling, which apparently deactivated the poison.[7][8]
