We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the varied responsibilities of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Role of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are many tasks that they can perform within the Mount Carroll IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the typical vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Mount Carroll IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more involved tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more involved duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and essentially perform the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years to complete. So the only real distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Mount Carroll IL area research facilities as well.

Vet Online Schools

Because the classes are provided over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using various venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Mount Carroll IL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, for instance for commuting and study supplies, can be lower compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Illinois and across the United States, you need to ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other essential qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Mount Carroll IL veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or technician college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive screening process that confirms you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is often a requirement for employment for a number of Mount Carroll IL veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet college or vocational school and program you enroll in must have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include looking on online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your specific schools. As a final pointer, phone some Mount Carroll IL veterinarians that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They might even suggest some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective means to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Mount Carroll IL veterinarian community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician school can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate may suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the Mount Carroll IL program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Mount Carroll IL schools you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already covered location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your vet technician classes from home or work, you must confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Mount Carroll IL school is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Illinois vet colleges you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Mount Carroll IL prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss due to work, sickness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your vet training into your hectic life.
