After all, you have to locate and enroll in a college that will deliver the appropriate training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you approach evaluating and contrasting colleges so that you can make the best selection? Many future students begin their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are close to their homes. After they have located some area schools, they ascertain which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are important considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your comparisons. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs should be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate decision. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the varied responsibilities of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the main factor will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are many duties that they can perform within the Rockland ID veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Rockland ID. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared with assistants and generally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated functions, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Rockland ID area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Rockland IDAn option that may be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while going to veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available through the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Rockland ID veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, for instance for travel and study materials, can be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the ideal choice for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Programs

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Idaho as well as across the Country, you need to ask some qualifying questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many potential students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other important qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to choose a college that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Rockland ID veterinary assistant and technician schools that you are considering.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or technician program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for many Rockland ID vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with online school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Idaho school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions regarding your targeted schools. As a final pointer, get in touch with some Rockland ID veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective means to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a clinical environment. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local Rockland ID veterinarian community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant school can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A low rate might suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may indicate that the Rockland ID program has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Rockland ID schools you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we previously discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to drive to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you have to make sure that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Rockland ID campus is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s essential that you determine if the Idaho vet colleges you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are available near Rockland ID prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family issues. You might discover that an online college is the best way to fit your vet training into your active life.
