After all, you have to find and enroll in a school that will furnish the appropriate training so that you can be successful as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you approach reviewing and comparing programs so that you can make the best selection? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for schools that are near their homes. After they have identified some nearby colleges, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are significant factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation should be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final selection. We have presented several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the various duties of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Function of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are many jobs that they can carry out within the Smyrna GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Smyrna GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared to assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complex duties, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically perform the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Smyrna GA area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Schools

attending vet tech school online in Smyrna GAAn approach that might make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Smyrna GA veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for instance for traveling and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more standard classroom courses. Just make certain that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Schools

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Georgia as well as across the United States, you should ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other important qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to select a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Smyrna GA veterinary assistant and tech programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet assistant or technician school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous review process that verifies you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for many Smyrna GA vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you choose should have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final suggestion, call some Smyrna GA vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to get practical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the programs you are considering have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop associations in the local Smyrna GA vet community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician college may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A low rate could signify that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might mean that the Smyrna GA program has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Smyrna GA programs you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you must make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Smyrna GA campus is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the Georgia vet colleges you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are offered near Smyrna GA prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss due to work, sickness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online program is the best way to fit your veterinary education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Smyrna GA

Smyrna, Georgia

Smyrna is a city northwest of the neighborhoods of Atlanta. It is in the inner ring of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 51,271.[5] The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population in 2013 to be 53,438.[6] It is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell MSA, which is included in the Atlanta—Athens-Clarke—Sandy Springs CSA. Smyrna grew by 28% between the years 2000 and 2012. It is historically one of the fastest growing cities in the State of Georgia, and one of the most densely populated cities in the metro area.[7]

Pioneers began settling the area in 1832. By the late 1830s, a religious encampment called Smyrna Camp Ground had become a popular travel destination and was well known throughout Georgia. It was named by Greeks for the Biblical city of Smyrna, modern day Izmir in Turkey, the home of the famous Christian martyr Polycarp. After the completion of the Western and Atlantic Railroad in 1842 the area began to grow. It was known by several names until 1872 – Varner's Station, Ruff's Siding, Neal Dow and Ruff's Station. The city was incorporated with the name Smyrna in 1872.[citation needed]

Two Civil War battles occurred in the area, the Battle of Smyrna Camp Ground and the Battle of Ruff's Mill, both on July 4, 1864.[8] The area's businesses, homes and 1849 covered bridge (since rebuilt and still in use today) were burned by Sherman's troops.
