The Job of a Vet Tech and Assistant

Part of your preference might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are numerous functions that they can perform within the Conyers GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Conyers GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complicated undertakings, for example assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their regular responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared with assistants and typically obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated functions, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and for the most part perform the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Conyers GA area research facilities as well.

Veterinary Online Colleges

Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Conyers GA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, such as for travel and study materials, can be lower compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just be sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Georgia and across the United States, you should ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many future students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Conyers GA vet assistant and technician schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the veterinary assistant or tech program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that ensures you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for a number of Conyers GA vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you enroll in should have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Conyers GA veterinary clinics that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the colleges you are looking at have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop relationships in the local Conyers GA vet community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech college can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A low rate may indicate that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might mean that the Conyers GA school has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Conyers GA programs you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously talked about location, but there are a few more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you have to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Conyers GA campus is located in or near a large city. In addition, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. Of course taking online classes might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you ascertain if the Georgia veterinary programs you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near Conyers GA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss due to sickness, work or family issues. You may discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your active life.
