But just how do you tackle reviewing and comparing colleges so that you can make the ideal selection? Many future students start their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are close to their homes. After they have identified some area colleges, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are significant concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation need to be evaluated as well. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final choice. We have furnished several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the varied roles of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Job of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the main factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the immediate supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are numerous duties that they can perform within the Farmington AR veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the standard veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Farmington AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared to assistants and typically earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states presently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Farmington AR area research facilities as well.

Veterinarian Online Degree Programs

Because the classes are provided via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Farmington AR veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, such as for commuting and study materials, may be lower compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Colleges

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Arkansas and across the USA, you need to ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many potential students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other essential qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you need to choose a college that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the Farmington AR vet technician and assistant programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or tech school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough review process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is in many cases a precondition for employment for a number of Farmington AR veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you choose should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final recommendation, contact some Farmington AR veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They might even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to obtain practical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the schools you are considering have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local Farmington AR veterinary community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech college can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A low rate may signify that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could signify that the Farmington AR college has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Farmington AR schools you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we previously discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you must make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Farmington AR school is located near or in a larger city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for community and state colleges. Of course attending online classes could be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s essential that you determine if the Arkansas veterinary programs you are considering offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near Farmington AR prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss because of sickness, work or family issues. You may discover that an online school is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Farmington AR

Farmington, Arkansas

Farmington is a city in Washington County, Arkansas. The community is nestled in a valley among the Boston Mountains, a subset of the Ozark Mountains. Although the first settlers came from the Deep South in 1828, the community did not incorporate until 1946. Located immediately west of Fayetteville in the Northwest Arkansas metropolitan statistical area, Farmington has been experiencing a population boom in recent years, as indicated by a 66% growth in population between the 2000 and 2010 censuses.[2] It has been characterized as a bedroom community by the University of Arkansas Community Design Center.[5]

The first settlers came from the Deep South in 1828, and the area was known as Engel's Mill until a post office was built in 1868 and the village was renamed. The Civil War was rough on the community, as many residents were Confederate sympathizers despite most of northwest Arkansas supporting the Union. The Battle of Prairie Grove occurred not far from Farmington, and the city was subject to raids by both armies as well as unaffiliated guerrillas and roughnecks.

Around the 1890s, residents found prosperity by growing strawberries and grapes and shipping them on the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway. The tracks were pulled up during World War II, something the company had wanted to do for years, under the guise of the war effort. Farmington was incorporated on October 15, 1946.[6]
