After all, you must find and enroll in a program that will furnish the proper training so that you can succeed as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach evaluating and contrasting colleges so that you can make the right selection? Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are near their homes. After they have identified some nearby colleges, they ascertain which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your comparisons. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation need to be evaluated also. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final choice. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the various responsibilities of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Function of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your preference may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the primary factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the immediate guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many duties that they can perform within the Livingston CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the typical veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Livingston CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their normal responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training in contrast to assistants and normally acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complex activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and essentially perform the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Livingston CA area research facilities as well.

Online Vet Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Livingston CAAn option that may make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Livingston CA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for instance for travel and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, trade and vocational schools in California as well as across the Country, you must ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other significant qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you need to enroll in a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Livingston CA vet assistant and tech colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the vet assistant or technician school you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a prerequisite for employment for many Livingston CA vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include looking on online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your specific schools. As a final recommendation, contact some Livingston CA veterinary clinics that you may wish to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They might even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local Livingston CA veterinary community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant program may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate might indicate that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the Livingston CA school has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Livingston CA schools you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you need to make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Livingston CA college is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes could be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the California vet schools you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Livingston CA before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of work, sickness or family responsibilities. You might find that an online college is the best way to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.
