After all, you need to locate and enroll in a college that will provide the necessary training so that you can succeed as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you approach assessing and contrasting colleges so that you can make the proper choice? Many aspiring students begin their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their residences. Once they have identified some area schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although expense and location are important considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation should be considered as well. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make an ultimate decision. We have furnished several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the various roles of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Function of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your decision might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the primary factor will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are a number of duties that they can perform within the Lombard IL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Lombard IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared to assistants and generally obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and for the most part perform the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Lombard IL area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Lombard ILAn approach that might make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are provided by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Lombard IL veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for instance for traveling and study supplies, can be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the perfect choice for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Colleges

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Illinois as well as across the Country, you need to ask some qualifying questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you need to enroll in a program that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Lombard IL veterinary assistant and tech colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary assistant or tech college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive review process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a prerequisite for employment for many Lombard IL vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you choose should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Lombard IL veterinarians that you may want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest one or more schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to get clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the schools you are looking at have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish associations in the local Lombard IL vet community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician program may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A lower rate could suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the Lombard IL program has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Lombard IL colleges you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we previously talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from work or home, you need to make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Lombard IL school is located close by or within a large city. Also, if you do choose to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Illinois veterinarian schools you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Lombard IL prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family issues. You might find that an online college is the best way to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Lombard IL

Lombard, Illinois

Lombard is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States, and a suburb of Chicago. The population was 42,322 at the 2000 census. The United States Census Bureau estimated the population in 2004 to be 42,975.[4] The village's challenge to the Census Bureau regarding its official 2010 population was accepted, revising the official population of the village from 43,165 to 43,395.[5]

Originally part of Potawatomi Native American landscape, the Lombard area was first settled by Americans of European descent in the 1830s. Lombard shares its early history with Glen Ellyn. Brothers Ralph and Morgan Babcock settled in a grove of trees along the DuPage River. In what was known as Babcock's Grove,[6] Lombard developed to the east and Glen Ellyn to the west. In 1837, Babcock's Grove was connected to Chicago by a stagecoach line which stopped at Stacy's Tavern at Geneva and St. Charles Roads. Fertile land, the DuPage River, and plentiful timber drew farmers to the area.

Sheldon and Harriet Peck moved from Onondaga, New York, to this area in 1837 to farm 80 acres (320,000 m2) of land. In addition, Peck was an artist and primitive portrait painter who traveled to clients across northeastern Illinois. The Peck house also served as the area's first school and has been restored by the Lombard Historical Society.[7] In 2011, the Peck House was inducted into the National Park Service's Network to Freedom[8]—a list of verified Underground Railroad locations.[9]
