But just how do you go about assessing and contrasting schools so that you can make the ideal choice? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are close to their homes. When they have located some area colleges, they find out which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are significant factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your assessments. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs should be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final selection. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the different duties of vet techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the main factor will undoubtedly be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Piggott AR veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the typical veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Piggott AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved activities, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared to assistants and usually obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated functions, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires 4 years. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Piggott AR area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Programs

attending vet tech school online in Piggott ARAn alternative that may make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are provided by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Piggott AR veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, such as for traveling and study supplies, may be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Training Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Arkansas and across the Country, you must ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our opening, many potential students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to enroll in a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Piggott AR veterinary technician and assistant schools that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the vet tech or assistant college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is in many cases a precondition for employment for a number of Piggott AR veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you select should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include looking on internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final pointer, call some Piggott AR veterinary clinics that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to get practical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Piggott AR vet community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant program can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate might signify that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the Piggott AR college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Piggott AR schools you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you need to confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Piggott AR school is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for community and state colleges. Of course taking classes online might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s essential that you find out if the Arkansas veterinarian colleges you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are available near Piggott AR prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies. You might find that an online program is the best solution to fit your vet education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Piggott AR

Piggott, Arkansas

Piggott is a city in Clay County, Arkansas, United States, one of that county's two seats (Corning is the other). It is the northern terminus of the Arkansas segment of the Crowley's Ridge Parkway, a National Scenic Byway. As of the 2010 census, Piggott's population was 3,849.[3] The town was founded by William N. Barron and named after his sister (Sarah Ann, wife of John Piggott).

Piggott is perhaps best known for its association with American writer and Nobel laureate Ernest Hemingway, whose second wife Pauline Pfeiffer was the daughter of prominent local landowner and businessman Paul Pfeiffer. After meeting and marrying in Paris in the late 1920s, Hemingway and Pauline made frequent and lengthy visits to her parents' home in Piggott, where Ernest Hemingway wrote portions of A Farewell to Arms, and other works. The Pfeiffer House and Carriage House are now preserved as the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center, run by Arkansas State University.

The town was mentioned in the 1990s television sitcom Evening Shade, set in Arkansas. The high school football team coached by "Wood Newton" (played by Burt Reynolds) celebrated when it tied Piggott High in a game, which it almost always lost.
