After all, you have to locate and enroll in a school that will furnish the appropriate training so that you can succeed as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about assessing and contrasting schools so that you can make the correct choice? Many potential students start their due diligence process by looking for schools that are close to their residences. After they have found some nearby colleges, they ascertain which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are important concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation need to be considered as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate decision. We have furnished several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the various roles of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the main factor will undoubtedly be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are numerous tasks that they can carry out within the Sylvester GA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Sylvester GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complex activities, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training in contrast to assistants and typically earn a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated functions, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states presently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and for the most part perform the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes four years. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Sylvester GA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Sylvester GAAn approach that may be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while attending veterinary college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Sylvester GA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for instance for commuting and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just make sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Georgia and across the Country, you must ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other essential qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Sylvester GA veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are considering.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the vet assistant or tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous review process that confirms you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Sylvester GA veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Sylvester GA vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective approach to get practical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the colleges you are considering have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local Sylvester GA vet community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant school can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate could indicate that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the Sylvester GA program has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Sylvester GA programs you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already covered location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you need to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Sylvester GA school is located in or close by a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Georgia veterinary schools you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near Sylvester GA prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, sickness or family issues. You might find that an online college is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your active life.

A Little Bit About Sylvester GA

Sylvester, Georgia

Sylvester is the county seat of Worth County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,990 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat[6] and business center of Worth County[7] and is claimed to be the Peanut Capital of the World due to its peanut production.[1]

Sylvester started as a "beautiful nowhere" in 1893 and was first called "Isabella Station". When the Brunswick and Albany Railroad came through southwest Georgia, the county seat was Isabella, which is located three miles north of the railroad. Slowly, however, the center of trade and commerce shifted south along the railroad. Two other towns, Poulan and Sumner, sprang up along the railroad in Worth County, but it was Isabella Station that grew and prospered the fastest. In 1894, the citizens voted to change the name to "Sylvester". In 1898, Sylvester voted to incorporate and on December 21 of that year the Georgia Legislature agreed to incorporate it as a city.

There have been four courthouses since Worth County was created in 1853. The first was a two-story frame structure on the public square in Isabella, which was then Worth's county seat. This building burned down in 1879, and a schoolhouse was used as a temporary courthouse until a new one could be built in 1893 — but that structure soon burned also. A new courthouse was constructed the following year, but in 1904 the legislature changed the county seat from Isabella to Sylvester.
