After all, you must search for and enroll in a college that will provide the necessary training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about reviewing and contrasting programs so that you can make the correct selection? Many future students start their due diligence process by searching for schools that are near their homes. After they have identified some local schools, they determine which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although cost and location are important factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your assessments. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs should be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final decision. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the varied roles of vet techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Role of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your training, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are a number of jobs that they can carry out within the Palo Cedro CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Palo Cedro CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, for instance assisting with surgeries. A few of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training compared to assistants and generally acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more involved duties, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Palo Cedro CA area research facilities also.

Veterinarian Online Programs

attending vet tech school online in Palo Cedro CAAn approach that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered via the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Palo Cedro CA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for instance for traveling and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, vocational and technical schools in California and across the USA, you need to ask some qualifying questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other significant qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to enroll in a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are covered in the list of questions that you need to ask the Palo Cedro CA veterinary assistant and tech programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the vet technician or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous review process that confirms you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is frequently a prerequisite for employment for many Palo Cedro CA veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations involving your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Palo Cedro CA veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to get clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local Palo Cedro CA vet community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant school may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate could mean that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may indicate that the Palo Cedro CA school has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could signify that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you may receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Palo Cedro CA programs you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we previously talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are going to commute to your vet technician classes from home or work, you have to make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Palo Cedro CA school is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes could be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you ascertain if the California veterinarian programs you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near Palo Cedro CA before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your active life.
