The Job of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your preference may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are a number of tasks that they can carry out within the El Segundo CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near El Segundo CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training in contrast to assistants and typically acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated duties, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states presently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or El Segundo CA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in El Segundo CAAn alternative that might be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinary college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are provided over the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local El Segundo CA veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for instance for travel and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just confirm that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in California as well as across the United States, you must ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other important qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the El Segundo CA veterinary assistant and technician colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the veterinary technician or assistant college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive review process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is in many cases a requirement for employment for a number of El Segundo CA vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions regarding your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some El Segundo CA veterinarians that you may want to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They might even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective approach to get clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the schools you are considering have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help develop connections in the local El Segundo CA veterinarian community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant college can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate may mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the El Segundo CA college has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the El Segundo CA colleges you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the El Segundo CA college is located in or near a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you determine if the California vet programs you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are available near El Segundo CA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss because of work, sickness or family emergencies. You may discover that an online school is the best way to fit your vet education into your busy life.

A Little Bit About El Segundo CA

El Segundo, California

El Segundo is a suburban city of Los Angeles located in Los Angeles County, California, United States. El Segundo, from Spanish, means "The Second" in English.[8] Located on the Santa Monica Bay, it was incorporated on January 18, 1917, and part of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments. The population was 16,654 at the 2010 census, slightly up from 16,033 at the 2000 census.

The El Segundo and Los Angeles coastal area was first settled by the Tongva (or Gabrieleños) and Chumash Native American tribes hundreds of years ago. The area was once a part of Rancho Sausal Redondo ("Round Willow Patch Ranch"). Rancho Sausal Redondo extended from Playa Del Rey in the North to Redondo Beach in the South. Originally a Mexican land grant owned by Antonio Ygnacio Avila, the rancho was later purchased by a Scottish baronet named Sir Robert Burnett. After his return to Scotland, the property was purchased by then current manager of the rancho, Daniel Freeman. Daniel Freeman sold portions of the rancho to multiple owners. George H. Peck owned the 840 acres (3.4 km2) of land the Chevron Refinery now sits on. Peck also developed land in neighboring El Porto where a street still bears his name. The city earned its name ("the second" in Spanish) as it was the site of the second Standard Oil refinery on the West Coast (the first was at Richmond in Northern California), when Standard Oil of California purchased the 840 acres (3.4 km2) of farm land in 1911.

The company was renamed Chevron in 1984, and the El Segundo refinery has entered its second century of operation.[9] The city was incorporated in 1917.
