After all, you have to find and enroll in a college that will deliver the appropriate training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about reviewing and contrasting programs so that you can make the proper choice? Many future students begin their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are close to their homes. Once they have found some area schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are important concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs need to be looked into as well. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final selection. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the various roles of vet techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Function of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the principal factor will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Port Costa CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the standard vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Port Costa CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated activities, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and essentially perform the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Port Costa CA area research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Port Costa CAAn approach that might be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are offered by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Port Costa CA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for instance for traveling and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom courses. Just confirm that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, trade and vocational schools in California as well as across the United States, you need to ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our opening, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other significant qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to choose a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Port Costa CA vet technician and assistant colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or tech program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for a number of Port Costa CA veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you select must have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions regarding your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, get in touch with some Port Costa CA veterinarians that you may wish to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They might even suggest one or more schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the schools you are considering have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the clinical training, but an internship can also help build associations in the local Port Costa CA veterinarian community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant college can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate might indicate that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may mean that the Port Costa CA school has an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you may get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Port Costa CA programs you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Okay, we previously covered location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you need to confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Port Costa CA campus is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges especially for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online might be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you ascertain if the California vet colleges you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near Port Costa CA prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to work, sickness or family emergencies. You may discover that an online college is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.16 square miles (0.41 km2), all of it land.
