We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the varied roles of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your decision may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are many duties that they can carry out within the Greenview IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the standard vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Greenview IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex activities, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training in contrast to assistants and normally earn a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated duties, such as assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states currently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and for the most part perform the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Greenview IL area research facilities as well.

Online Vet Programs

attending vet tech school online in Greenview ILAn option that may make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Greenview IL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, such as for travel and study supplies, can be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Illinois as well as across the USA, you must ask some qualifying questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many future students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other significant qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And of course you need to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Greenview IL vet assistant and tech schools that you are considering.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the vet tech or assistant school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that confirms you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is often a requirement for employment for many Greenview IL veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Greenview IL veterinarians that you may wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a professional environment. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help build relationships in the local Greenview IL veterinary community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant college can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A lower rate might mean that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could indicate that the Greenview IL program has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Greenview IL schools you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your vet technician classes from home or work, you must confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Greenview IL campus is located near or in a large city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking classes online may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you determine if the Illinois veterinary schools you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are available near Greenview IL prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.
