We have furnished several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the various duties of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your preference may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are many jobs that they can perform within the Gridley CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the typical vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Gridley CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their regular responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training compared with assistants and typically obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes four years to complete. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Gridley CA area research facilities as well.

Online Vet Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Gridley CAAn option that may make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending vet school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are made available via the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Gridley CA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for example for traveling and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the ideal choice for you.

But we have already pointed out other important qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you need to choose a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Gridley CA veterinary assistant and technician programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the vet assistant or technician college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive screening process that confirms you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Gridley CA vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you select should have an outstanding reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with internet school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Gridley CA veterinarians that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local Gridley CA vet community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician college can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate could suggest that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, verify that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may signify that the Gridley CA program has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Gridley CA schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we previously talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your vet tech classes from work or home, you have to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Gridley CA school is located near or in a large city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online might be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you determine if the California veterinary colleges you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are offered near Gridley CA prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family responsibilities. You might discover that an online school is the best solution to fit your vet education into your active life.
