But just how do you go about reviewing and contrasting colleges so that you can make the right choice? Many potential students start their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are near their residences. When they have located some area schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are significant concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs need to be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate choice. We have furnished several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the various duties of vet techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many duties that they can perform within the Lisle IL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Lisle IL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training in contrast to assistants and normally earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complex duties, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and basically perform the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes 4 years. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Lisle IL area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Lisle ILAn alternative that may be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available through the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using multiple methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Lisle IL veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for example for traveling and study materials, can be lower compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Schools

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Illinois and across the USA, you should ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our opening, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you need to select a program that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Lisle IL veterinary assistant and tech colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or technician school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous review process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is often a requirement for employment for many Lisle IL veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you choose should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary field. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include looking on online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Illinois school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations involving your specific schools. As a final tip, get in touch with some Lisle IL veterinarians that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They might even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the colleges you are looking at have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help establish connections in the local Lisle IL veterinarian community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech program can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A lower rate may suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the Lisle IL program has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Lisle IL colleges you are considering what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you have to make sure that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Lisle IL college is located in or near a large city. In addition, if you do decide to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges especially for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online could be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Illinois vet schools you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near Lisle IL before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of work, sickness or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online college is the best solution to fit your vet training into your busy life.
