Although cost and location are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only critical ones when making your assessments. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final decision. We have furnished several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the varied duties of vet assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Function of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of tasks that they can carry out within the Adamsville AL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the typical vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Adamsville AL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved activities, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared with assistants and generally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complex activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states presently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and essentially perform the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires four years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Some may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Adamsville AL area research facilities also.

Online Vet Schools

attending vet tech school online in Adamsville ALAn option that may be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are provided by means of the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Adamsville AL veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, such as for commuting and study materials, may be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Alabama and across the USA, you should ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other significant qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to choose a school that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Adamsville AL vet assistant and technician schools that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or tech school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that ensures you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a requirement for employment for a number of Adamsville AL veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Alabama school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final pointer, call some Adamsville AL veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend one or more schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective way to get practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local Adamsville AL vet community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant college can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A low rate could signify that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the Adamsville AL college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Adamsville AL colleges you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to attend a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we previously talked about location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you have to make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Adamsville AL school is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you find out if the Alabama veterinarian schools you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are available near Adamsville AL before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of sickness, work or family issues. You might find that an online college is the best solution to fit your vet education into your hectic life.
