The Responsibilities of a Vet Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are numerous tasks that they can perform within the Bay Minette AL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have gone through a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Bay Minette AL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their normal responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared with assistants and generally earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and essentially perform the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Bay Minette AL area research facilities also.

Vet Online Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Bay Minette ALAn approach that might be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are provided through the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Bay Minette AL veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for instance for traveling and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Degree Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Alabama as well as across the USA, you must ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many future students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And of course you need to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Bay Minette AL vet assistant and tech programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive screening process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a precondition for employment for many Bay Minette AL veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet trade school or college and program you choose should have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Alabama school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Bay Minette AL veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They may even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the programs you are looking at have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local Bay Minette AL veterinarian community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician program can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate may indicate that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could mean that the Bay Minette AL program has an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Bay Minette AL programs you are considering what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we previously talked about location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from work or home, you must make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Bay Minette AL campus is located in or close by a larger city. In addition, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking online classes may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Alabama veterinary schools you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near Bay Minette AL prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of sickness, work or family issues. You may find that an online college is the ideal way to fit your vet education into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Bay Minette AL

Bay Minette, Alabama

In the first days of Baldwin County, the town of McIntosh Bluff (now in Mobile County, west of Baldwin County) on the Tombigbee River was the county seat. After being transferred to the town of Blakeley in 1810, the county seat was later moved to the city of Daphne in 1868. In 1900, by an act of the legislature of Alabama, the county seat was authorized for relocation to the city of Bay Minette; however, the city of Daphne resisted relocation. The citizens of Bay Minette moved the county records from Daphne in the middle of the night on October 11–12, 1901[4] and delivered them to the city of Bay Minette - where the Baldwin County seat remains to this day.[5] A mural for the new post office built in 1937 was commissioned by the WPA and painted by Hilton Leech of Bridgeport, Connecticut, to commemorate this event.[4]

In September 2011, the town attempted to enact a program called "Operation Restore Our Community". It would have allowed those convicted of a misdemeanor to substitute imprisonment with mandatory church attendance for one year.[6] However, this program was challenged due to violating separation of church and state, and the program's start was delayed for judicial review.[7] It appears to have been scrapped.
