After all, you need to find and enroll in a school that will provide the proper training so that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach evaluating and comparing schools so that you can make the proper choice? Many potential students start their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their homes. After they have located some nearby colleges, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are important concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only critical ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation need to be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final decision. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the varied responsibilities of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Function of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are numerous jobs that they can perform within the Clayton AL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have gone through a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Clayton AL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex undertakings, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared to assistants and usually obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complex functions, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and essentially perform the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes four years. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Some may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Clayton AL area research facilities also.

Online Veterinarian Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Clayton ALAn option that might make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are provided through the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Clayton AL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, for instance for traveling and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Alabama as well as across the United States, you must ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Clayton AL vet assistant and tech schools that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the vet assistant or technician college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive review process that confirms you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is in many cases a precondition for employment for a number of Clayton AL veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet trade school or college and program you choose should have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with online school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Alabama school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, contact some Clayton AL veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They may even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to obtain practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the programs you are looking at have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Clayton AL veterinary community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant college may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate may mean that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might mean that the Clayton AL college has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Clayton AL colleges you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already covered location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you need to confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Clayton AL campus is located near or in a larger city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online might be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s imperative that you find out if the Alabama vet programs you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are available near Clayton AL before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of work, sickness or family issues. You might find that an online school is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your active life.
