The Function of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your preference may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the main determiner will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many duties that they can carry out within the Excel AL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Excel AL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more involved activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared with assistants and normally earn a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more involved activities, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states presently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and basically carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Excel AL area research facilities also.

Since the classes are offered by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Excel AL veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for instance for traveling and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

As we pointed out in our opening, many potential students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously touched on other significant qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you need to enroll in a program that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Excel AL vet technician and assistant programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the vet assistant or technician college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous review process that confirms you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is in many cases a prerequisite for employment for many Excel AL veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you choose should have an excellent reputation within the veterinary field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alabama school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations regarding your specific schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Excel AL veterinarians that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They might even suggest one or more schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the schools you are looking at have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help develop relationships in the local Excel AL veterinary community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant program may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate could signify that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Excel AL college has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Excel AL colleges you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you need to make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Excel AL school is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online could be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Alabama veterinarian colleges you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are available near Excel AL before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss because of work, sickness or family emergencies. You may find that an online college is the best solution to fit your vet education into your busy life.
