Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are numerous jobs that they can carry out within the Hanceville AL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the conventional vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Hanceville AL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared to assistants and generally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and essentially perform the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes 4 years. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Hanceville AL area research facilities also.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the vet assistant or tech college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As a final suggestion, call some Hanceville AL veterinary clinics that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a professional environment. Ask if the schools you are considering have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help establish connections in the local Hanceville AL veterinarian community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant school may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate might signify that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could signify that the Hanceville AL college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Hanceville AL schools you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we already talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from work or home, you have to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Hanceville AL school is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the Alabama vet programs you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Hanceville AL before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
