Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are numerous jobs that they can perform within the Paint Rock AL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Paint Rock AL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved undertakings, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their regular responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared to assistants and normally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated functions, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Some may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Paint Rock AL area research facilities also.

The educational program is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Paint Rock AL veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, such as for traveling and study supplies, may be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Alabama as well as across the USA, you need to ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other essential qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Paint Rock AL veterinary technician and assistant schools that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the vet tech or assistant program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive screening process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is often a requirement for employment for many Paint Rock AL veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you choose should have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include looking on internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alabama school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Paint Rock AL vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local Paint Rock AL veterinarian community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech school can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate might suggest that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the Paint Rock AL program has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Paint Rock AL colleges you are considering what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Get feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously discussed location, but there are a few more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you have to make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Paint Rock AL school is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do choose to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online could be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Alabama veterinary programs you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Paint Rock AL before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of work, sickness or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online school is the best way to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.
