After all, you have to find and enroll in a program that will furnish the appropriate training so that you can be successful as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you tackle assessing and contrasting colleges so that you can make the best selection? Many future students start their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are close to their homes. When they have found some nearby schools, they determine which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your comparisons. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs need to be looked into as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final choice. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the various responsibilities of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal determiner will undoubtedly be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are many functions that they can carry out within the Galena AK veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Galena AK. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved undertakings, for instance assisting with surgeries. A few of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training compared with assistants and typically earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years to complete. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Galena AK area research facilities as well.

Veterinarian Online Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Galena AKAn option that might be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered via the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Galena AK veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, such as for travel and study supplies, can be more affordable compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Training Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Alaska as well as across the Country, you must ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other important qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Galena AK vet assistant and technician schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the vet technician or assistant school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough review process that ensures you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is often a precondition for employment for a number of Galena AK veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary field. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations regarding your specific schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Galena AK veterinary clinics that you may wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even recommend one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to get clinical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help develop connections in the local Galena AK vet community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant school may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate might indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Galena AK program has an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Galena AK schools you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to attend a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you must make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Galena AK college is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s essential that you find out if the Alaska veterinarian programs you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Galena AK prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family issues. You might discover that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary education into your active life.

A Little Bit About Galena AK

Galena, Alaska

Galena (/ɡəˈliːnə/) (Notaalee Denh in Koyukon) is a city in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska. At the 2010 census the population was 470, with a 2016 estimate of 488 inhabitants. Galena was established in 1918, and a military airfield was built adjacent to the city during World War II. The city was incorporated in 1971.

The Koyukon Athabascans had seasonal camps in the area and moved as the wild game migrated. In the summer many families floated on rafts to the Yukon River to fish for salmon. There were 12 summer fish camps located on the Yukon River between the Koyukuk River and the Nowitna River. Galena was established in 1918 near an Athabascan fish camp called Henry's Point. It became a supply and point for nearby lead ore mines that opened in 1918 and 1919.[5]

In 1941 and 1942, during World War II,[5] a military air field was built adjacent to the civilian airport, and the two facilities shared the runway and flight line facilities. This air field was designated Galena Air Force Station shortly after the split of the United States Air Force from the United States Army, which occurred as a result of the National Security Act of 1947. During the 1950s, the construction of additional military facilities at Galena and the nearby Campion Air Force Station, in support of Galena's mission as a forward operating base under the auspices of the 5072nd Air Base Group, headquartered at Elmendorf Air Force Base, near Anchorage, provided improvements to the airport and the local infrastructure, causing economic growth for the area.[citation needed]
