But just how do you tackle evaluating and comparing colleges so that you can make the right choice? Many potential students start their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their residences. Once they have identified some area schools, they ascertain which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are important considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your assessments. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation need to be considered also. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final choice. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the various responsibilities of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Role of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main determiner will undoubtedly be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are many tasks that they can perform within the Petersburg AK veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Petersburg AK. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training in contrast to assistants and generally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complex activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states presently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes 4 years. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Petersburg AK area research facilities as well.

Veterinarian Online Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Petersburg AKAn option that might make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available through the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Petersburg AK veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, such as for traveling and study supplies, may be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just confirm that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Schools

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Alaska as well as across the United States, you must ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other significant qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to choose a school that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Petersburg AK vet technician and assistant colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you verify that the veterinary tech or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that verifies you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is frequently a precondition for employment for a number of Petersburg AK veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet college or vocational school and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Alaska school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final suggestion, call some Petersburg AK veterinary clinics that you might wish to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the programs you are considering have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local Petersburg AK veterinary community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech program can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A lower rate might indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Petersburg AK college has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Petersburg AK colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet tech classes from work or home, you need to make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Petersburg AK campus is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. Of course attending online classes might be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the Alaska veterinary programs you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are offered near Petersburg AK prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family issues. You may discover that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your vet training into your active life.

A Little Bit About Petersburg AK

Petersburg, Alaska

Petersburg (Tlingit: Gantiyaakw SĂ©edi "Steamboat Channel") is a census-designated place (CDP) in Petersburg Borough, Alaska, United States. The population was 2,948 at the 2010 census, down from 3,224 in 2000.

The borough encompasses Petersburg and Kupreanof, plus mostly uninhabited areas stretching to the Canadian–American border and the southern boundary of the City and Borough of Juneau.[1][2] While the city of Petersburg ceased to exist as a separate administrative entity (the borough assembly created a service area to assume operation of the former city's services), the tiny city of Kupreanof remains separate within the borough.[3]

Tlingits from Kupreanof Island had long used a summer fish camp at the north end of Mitkof Island. Earlier cultures of indigenous people also used the island: remnants of fish traps and some petroglyphs have been carbon-dated back some 1,000 years.
