After all, you have to search for and enroll in a college that will provide the appropriate training so that you can be successful as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you tackle reviewing and contrasting programs so that you can make the ideal choice? Many future students begin their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are near their homes. When they have found some local schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although cost and location are important factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your evaluations. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs should be evaluated also. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make a final selection. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll explore the various roles of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Role of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are many functions that they can perform within the Hotevilla AZ veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the typical vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Hotevilla AZ. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more involved activities, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training compared with assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complex duties, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Hotevilla AZ area research facilities also.

Vet Online Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Hotevilla AZAn alternative that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinary college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are provided through the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Hotevilla AZ veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for instance for travel and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just make certain that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Colleges

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Arizona as well as across the Country, you should ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously mentioned other important qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you need to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Hotevilla AZ veterinary assistant and technician schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or tech program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive screening process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a precondition for employment for many Hotevilla AZ veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you enroll in must have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Arizona school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your specific schools. As a final pointer, call some Hotevilla AZ veterinary clinics that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective means to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a clinical setting. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local Hotevilla AZ veterinarian community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant program may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A lower rate could suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could signify that the Hotevilla AZ college has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Hotevilla AZ colleges you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we previously discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you have to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Hotevilla AZ campus is located in or near a large city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you determine if the Arizona veterinarian programs you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are offered near Hotevilla AZ before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, sickness or family issues. You may discover that an online school is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.
